Kristen Stewart 'Would Have Loved' to Grow Up with LGBTQ-Themed Christmas Movies

Kristen Stewart called her upcoming LGBTQ-themed holiday movie "Happiest Season" "extremely attractive" and "a huge exhale," reports The Daily Mail.

"It's a gay Christmas movie," Stewart exalted, adding, "I know that's an annoying thing to label it right off the bat, but, for me, that is extremely attractive, and sounds like ... a huge exhale."

"I didn't grow up with a movie that had such expansive ambition, that had two female leads at the center of a love story, and not in this format," the actor, who in real life is in a same-sex relationship with screenwriter Dylan Meyer, went on to say.

"Not to say there hasn't been great queer content made over the years that has been really beautiful and really important touchstones. But at the same time, it's not something that I grew up with, and I would have loved to."

Stewart plays Abby, the same-sex partner of Harper, who is played by MacKenzie Davis. When Harper takes Abby home for the holidays, Abby plans to spring a marriage proposal on her during the Christmas festivities - an idea that's complicated by the fact that Abby has to pretend to be an "orphan friend" of Harper's because Harper isn't out to her family.

Stewart revealed that she accepted the role when the film's director, Clea DuVall, traveled to Germany to ask her. Duvall sought Stewart's input as to who might portray the other half of the same-sex couple; Davis, Stewart said, had to be the choice because "absolutely literally no one else" would do. Speaking of her co-star, Stewart told The Guardian, "It was really important for me to show a queer couple feeling cool and comfortable and in their own skin. I can't watch this movie and be like, it's kind of bullshit. Anyway, luckily, Mackenzie exists, and there you go."

In an interview with Duvall for InStyle last month, Steward evinced sympathy for the character of Harper, saying that she had "been on both sides of that dynamic where someone is having a hard time acknowledging who they are and the other person is more self-accepting."

The film is stocked with several other LGBTQ actors, including Dan Levy and Victor Garber. DuVall, herself an out lesbian, has a role in the movie as well, according to IMDb.

"Happiest Season" was originally intended for theatrical release, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans. The film will debut November 25 on Hulu. Meantime, both Lifetime and the Hallmark Channel have LGBTQ-themed holiday movies of their own set for premieres, and those films also feature out actors.

Jonathan Bennett stars opposite Brad Harder in "The Christmas House," premiering November 22 on the Hallmark Channel. Lifetime similarly offers "The Christmas Setup," starring Ben Lewis and his real-life husband, Blake Lee, which premieres December 12. "A New York Christmas Wedding," written and directed by Otoja Abit, is currently streaming on Netflix.
