Chanel Releases AI Lipscanner App

Since the start of the pandemic, cosmetics retailers have been looking for ways to replicate the "try before you buy" experience while also increasing business when people are either working from home or hiding their smackers behind a mask.

Chanel's groundbreaking new makeup app, Lipscanner, makes use of the latest AI technology to, as Vogue states, "[match] any color in the world to the nearest Chanel lipstick."

Scan an image with your color of choice, and Lipscanner will match it up to products in one of five color families in the Chanel line – natural, pink, orange, red, or plum. The app also suggests suitable textures such as matte, shine, gloss, satin, or metallic.

The app is designed to scan photos of clothing and accessories. Vogue explains that "with the algorithm trained to analyze hundreds of thousands of faces, the app is even programmed to take skin tone and lip shape into account before recommending the appropriate color and finish."

Other apps taking advantage of AI technology include Amazon's StyleSnap, where users can upload a photo of themselves in an outfit and receive fashion suggestions. FaceApp allows users to manipulate images of themselves – give yourself a virtual makeover by cleaning up or retouching photos, or see how you look with facial hair or as an older person! Beardify is exactly what the app's name says: Give your mug a virtual beard.

As we continue to navigate the pandemic – and hopefully with an end in sight now that the vaccination process is underway – health experts have said one of the best self-care methods is getting dressed and maintaining basic hygiene, particularly for those working from home. Why not make it fun with some new lipstick or a virtual makeover?
