YouTube Demonetized Controversial Makeup Star James Charles After Sexual Misconduct Allegations
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
It will be harder for controversial makeup star James Charles to make money off his incredibly popular YouTube videos after being accused of sexual misconduct with minors, according to the Guardian.
YouTube did not say how long Charles' channel, which boasts 25.5 million subscribers, will be demonetized for but said the move is part of the company's Creator Responsibility Policy.
"We can confirm that we applied our Creator Responsibility Policy and temporarily removed James Charles from the YouTube partner program," the Google-owned company told the newspaper. "If we see that a creator's on and/or off-platform behavior harms our users, community, employees, or ecosystem we may take action to protect the community."
According to a report from Insider, YouTube may take action against creators who intend to cause "malicious harm to others" or "real-world harm" via abuse, violence, cruelty, or fraudulent or deceptive behavior, reports Business Insider.
The news comes after Charles, 21, was accused by more than 15 men and boys of sexual misconduct, and some accuse the YouTuber of underage sexting, reports the Guardian.
Additionally, the beauty band Morphe ended its relationship with Charles last week.
Charles tweeted that ending his relationship with the company was "mutually agreed."
Earlier this month Charles posted a 14-minute video to apologize for texts he had exchanged with underage boys. In the video, titled "holding myself accountable," Charles said he wished to speak "from the heart".
"First and foremost, I need to say sorry," the beauty influencer said. "I owe a massive apology to anybody I've hurt or anybody I've made uncomfortable with my actions."
"I fully understand my actions...they are wrong," James said, before recounting, in both cases, "I added both of these people on Snapchat, asked how old they were, was told eighteen, believed them, engaged in a flirty conversation, and later on found out they were actually sixteen. Upon finding out, I was immediately embarrassed and blocked both people.
"Later, when I saw them making videos about it and those videos going viral, my immediate reaction, completely honestly, was to be really, really upset," he added.
