Watch: 2 Weeks After Gay Slur, Soccer Star Sebastian Lletget Receives 2-Game Suspension

Two weeks ago, USMNT and LA Galaxy soccer star Sebastian Lletget posted a video of himself calling his teammate Julian Araujo a gay slur to his 689,000 Instagram followers. "After Outsports contacted "spokespeople for the Galaxy and USMNT, seeking comment, Lletget deleted the video," Outsports reported. "Less than two hours later, Lletget reached out to our Cyd Zeigler, telling him by phone he wanted to apologize for his actions and take full responsibility."

It was announced late last week that Lletget "has been suspended two matches by Major League Soccer for calling a teammate a gay slur and posting it on Instagram," Outsports reports. In addition, the league is fining Lletget and requiring him to attend diversity training.

This announcement came after Lletget was allowed to play in the Galaxy's opening game on April 18 at Inter Miami, which the Galaxy won, 3-2.

"The league's actions on Friday demonstrate a clear commitment to that 'zero tolerance' of homophobic slurs in the league, and its firm position that the term 'puto' has no place in the sport," adds Outsports.

Some, Outsports reporter Cyd Zeigler wrote, may wonder why he received only a two-game suspension instead of the three which MLS has handed out in the past in similar cases. But Zeigler was expecting only a one-game suspension after Lletget's prompt and seemingly authentic apology. He added: "The league is going above and beyond my expectations here to make sure a clear message is sent."

"MLS acknowledges and appreciates Lletget's prompt apology and the accountability he has taken for his actions," the league said in a statement.
