Watch: Tom Hiddleston Teases Genderfluid Loki in the New MCU TV Series

Tom Hiddleston's Loki – a character in the MCU based on the trickster god from Norse mythology – has been revealed as genderfluid in a teaser promoting an upcoming TV series centered on the character, TVLine has reported.

"The Asgardian trickster's gender fluidity is not a new development," TVLine noted, making reference to a 2014 comic book moment in which King of the Norse gods "Odin referred to Loki as 'my son, and my daughter, and my child who is both.'"

Another precedent was set in the 2008 comic book "Thor" in which "the character possessed the body meant for fellow Asgardian Lady Sif," as noted by the U.K. outlet the Independent. But the ultimate precedent was set by Norse mythology itself, which "describes Loki as gender-fluid and bisexual," the article points out.

It took a while, however, for the MCU to get around to "officially" acknowledging the character's genderfluid identity. CBR noted that "this is the first time that the MCU has confirmed that Loki is gender-fluid," adding that the embrace of the character's genderfluidity marks "a major change for the MCU, which has not even confirmed the fact that Valkyrie is bisexual just yet (despite initially meaning to do so in 'Thor: Ragnarok')."

The tidbit of information was spotted by eagle-eyed fans who noticed that a file on Loki as shown in teasers posted to Twitter specified the character's gender as "fluid."

The disclosure prompted even more excitement because previously leaked photos from the set of "Loki" showed "actor Sophie Di Martino wearing what looked like a version of the Lady Loki costume," the Independent noted. Fans buzzed about "Lady Loki" being part of the upcoming series.

"With confirmation that Loki's gender-fluidity is now canon in the MCU, it is looking all the more likely that Di Martino will indeed star as Lady Loki in the forthcoming series," the Independent added.

TVLine also provided some background details on the new show, reporting that the series "follows MCU vet Tom Hiddleston's God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother's shadow, in a series that takes place after the events of 'Avengers: Endgame' (during which a circa 2012 Loki happened upon a dropped Tesseract, and teleported to... well, you will see where/when soon enough)."

"Loki" is part of the MCU's "Phase Four," which includes TV series ("WandaVision," "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"), as well as feature films. Later this year, another Phase Four project, "Eternals," the MCU's 26th feature film, introduces the MCU film franchise's first out gay superhero, Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), who is married to a non-super-powered man.

"Loki" premieres June 9 on Disney+.
