Watch the Trailer for Ryan Murphy-Produced Gay Conversion Therapy Doc 'Pray Away'

Co-produced by Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, the first look at the upcoming gay conversion therapy documentary, "Pray Away," is here.

Directed by Kristine Stolakis, the film is set to premiere on August 3 on Netflix.

According to Variety, the doc "chronicles the rise and fall of Exodus International, a group founded in the 1970s by five members of an evangelical church that claimed gay people could become straight if they 'pray away' their homosexuality. Since then, many of the group's most well-known and outspoken members have come out as LGTBQ and have gone public with how harmful conversion therapy is. Conversion therapy is discredited by the World Health Organization and LGBTQ activists have forged legislative and legal battles across the world to ban the therapies."

Conversion therapy has been banned in 20 states (as well as D.C. and Puerto Rico) as it has been deemed a pseudoscience and opposed by many health institutions, including the American Psychiatric Association.

The "Pray Away" trailer shows members of Exodus talking about the success of conversion therapy in the media before showing current clips of them disavowing the practice.

Previously, Murphy co-produced the 2019 doc "Circus of Books" for Netflix. The film, directed by Rachel Mason, centered on the West Hollywood bookstore of the same name that also sold gay porn.
