Iconic Queer Artist Tom of Finland Lives On with Carne Bollente Ready-to-Wear Collaboration
READ TIME: 6 MIN.
The art of Tom of Finland lives on in fashion as Paris-basedlabel Carne Bollenteis the latest to celebrate the work the transgressive queer artist."The new collection – a collaboration with the Tom of Finland Foundation – mixes the artists' iconic style with Carne Bollente's embroidery and sex positive graphics," reports the web site Hypebeast.
"Throughout the collaboration, black and white Tom of Finland illustrations feature alongside a new Carne Bollente logo. The items include T-shirts in off-white and washed pink, crew neck jumpers and a tote bag," writes Hypebeast. "Perhaps the stand-out item is a tee that features a Carne Bollente character integrated into the Tom of Finland scene."
Carne Bollente explained their reason for the collection in a statement:
"Through his art, Tom always defended sex positivity and fought for LGBT+ rights. He affirmed and glamorized gay sexuality; giving confidence to gay men at a time when many had internalized homophobia and sexual guilt. His imagery turned upside down the cliches that gays were weak. It portrayed gay men as strong and desirable, which was refreshing and empowering. This collaboration reflects our desire to introduce this artist to new generations but also to highlight the humoristic part of his work less known from the public."
They continued with a statement on their website: "We are really proud to present to you our collaboration with Tom of Finland foundation. Master of the homoerotic arts, Tom of Finland was always a huge inspiration for Carne Bollente. In 1984, the nonprofit Tom o Finland Foundation (ToFF) was established by Duk Dehner and his friend Tom. As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homoerotic art, the Foundation's original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art in response to the rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response. Today ToFF continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality."
The first design in the limited collection uses the iconic design of "The Loggers" cover, an erotic story about tough Swedish lumberjacks drawn by Tom Of Finland, //fashionablymale.net/2021/08/25/carne-bollente-x-tom-of-finland-capsule-collection-2021/reports the website Fashionably Male.

"In parallel with the collaboration, the fall-winter 2021/22 collection is generally inspired by the universe of erotic magazines and pornographic studios of the 80s in the United States and includes a series of t-shirts for sex advertisements – shops, miraculous pills or invitation cards for his SM evenings."
Founded in Paris in 2014, "Carne Bollente aims to subtly infuse sex into its range of clothing," reports the French website TÊTU. "It is also a label that wants to be queer in its approach.'We try to represent all sexualities, not just in a heteronormous way,'explained one of its creators, Agoston Palinko.'We include lesbians, gays, trans.'One thing is certain: this capsule collection should delight Tom of Finland aficionados. The various pieces of this fruitful collaboration can be discovered nowon the Carne Bollente e-shop."
