Oregon Man Who Attacked Gay Man Charged with Federal Hate Crime

An Oregon man who reportedly used Grindr to find gay men to assault has been charged with a hate crime, The Hill reported.

Daniel Andrew McGee, 22, was arrested by the FBI on Monday and charged by the Department of Justice on Tuesday with assaulting a gay man because of his sexual orientation.

McGee allegedly entered the victim's apartment on July 5 and began assaulting the man with a "wooden club." He continued doing so "over a period of several minutes" while the victim pleaded for him to stop.

"The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital," according to a statement from the Justice Department. The federal complaint also says that McGee went to the stranger's apartment "because he knew that demons would be there and that his nightmares told him he needed to kill the man," as reported by The Oregonian.

According to McGee's father, he has autism and did not know that he left their house that night, according to the complaint. However, the Justice Department's investigation also found that McGee searched violent anti-gay material on the internet, including "how to get away with murder and how murderers avoid getting caught," before the attack.
