Netflix has unveiled an all-new trailer for one of the streamer's most anticipated new series: the gay romantic dramedy "Heartstopper," based on the popular graphic novels by Alice Oseman.
"Heartstopper" is a coming-of-age story that follows the growing connection between two high school students in England.
"Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) is openly gay, and has a small, close-knit group of friends who are 'borderline outcasts,'" AV Club summarized. "Once he meets Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), the school's cute star player of the rugby team, things change drastically for both of them."
"Nick is believed to be straight, so Charlie's feelings seem futile at first," AV Club added. But when Nick invites Charlie to join the rugby team, both their worlds are thrown into turmoil, with Charlie's skeptical friends voicing their doubts – "He's the straightest person I've ever seen," one exclaims – and Nick's social circle falling away from him.
The trailer shows Charlie's fantasies that Nick will profess his love; in reality, Nick is getting into fist fights while one of Charlie's pals, Tao (William Gao) assures Charlie that if Nick is "even slightly mean to you..."
"You'll murder him," Charlie fills in.
"I was going to say I'd send him a strongly-worded DM," Tao replies, "but murder's fine, too."
At another point, Charlie asks a teacher – who seems to serve as an understanding mentor – how he can "stop liking someone? Specifically, a straight guy."
"A question for the ages," the teacher responds.
The new trailer comes a month after the first trailer for the series dropped in March. As EDGE reported at the time, the eight-part series stems from a 2016 online comic.
"Six years and four physical volumes later, we'll finally get to see Nick and Charlie fall for each other on screen – and we'll also get to see the rest of their crew, including Charlie's sister Tori (Jenny Walser) and friends Tao (William Gao), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown), and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell)," Netflix teased on its website.
"When it comes to queer YA British series, Netflix usually gets things right," AV Club noted, "especially with sleeper hit 'Sex Education,' and this one also looks promising."
Will Nick prove to be an exceptionally loyal ally? Or do the assumptions about him being straight miss the mark? "Heartstopper" premieres on Netflix on April 22.
