Out global recording star Ricky Martin has signed to star in a 10-episode Apple TV+ series based on Juliet McDaniel's comedic novel about a ruthless social climber and her closeted husband, Deadline reported.
Deadline called the part "a huge lead role for Martin, who was last seen playing Antonio D'Amico in Ryan Murphy's critically-acclaimed FX drama 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace,' part of the 'American Crime Story' anthology" series.
TV Insider detailed that the series will also star Laura Dern, Allison Janney, and Kristen Wiig, with Dern having "developed the series with her producing partner Jayme Lemons."
The Washington Independent Review of Books said that, in the novel, Robert is "a closeted gay tavern owner" who marries social climber Maxine Hortence Simmons at a low point in both their lives; she's recently divorced, and he has been "picked up in a raid at a gay bar."
TV Insider summarized the series like this: "Set during the powderkeg era of the early 1970s, the series asks the questions that still baffle us today: 'Who gets a seat at the table?' 'How do you get a seat at the table?' 'What will you sacrifice to get there?'"
TV Insider also noted that Martin "is scheduled to perform in Cannes at the American Foundation for Aids Research gala later this week."
