Dustin Lance Black Reveals 'Serious Head Injury,' Long Road to Recovery

Oscar-winning gay screenwriter Dustin Lance Black ("Milk") revealed in an Instagram post that "A month ago I sustained a serious head injury that put me out of commission," and said he's facing a long road to recovery, PEOPLE Magazine reported.

Black related that he was "Showing little improvement" and that his "doctors ordered me to shut off my brain in hopes of it healing."

"This has been a challenging, frightening time for a creative type who depends on what's in his skull to work, care and love," Black added. "And now I understand the road back will be long."

Apparently posting from Greece, Black included photos of himself walking on a beach and posing with his husband, Olympic gold medalist diver Tom Daley, who, he said in his post, "took us to the Greek Islands to make me shut off."

"I can already feel this trip is a step in the right direction, and I finally feel safe sharing a bit again," Black added. "Thank you for all of your love and patience. More to come. Promise."

"Black announced the news Monday [Sept. 26] on Instagram," Variety detailed, "but did not mention any specifics about what caused the head injury."

Though it may be entirely unrelated, news sources said late last month that Black called the police after an "altercation" at a London club on Aug. 18. As EDGE reported at the time, "Black and his husband Olympic champion Tom Daley were out for dinner and stopped by Freedom nightclub in Soho where they ran into Teddy Edwardes, 32, star of BBC3 show 'The Big Proud Party Agency.'"

"Things went south while they were having drinks and Edwardes asked a person to leave the table. At that time, she claims, Black 'grew annoyed... and threw a drink over her.' She added that she responded by giving him 'a little tap on the head.' But security removed her and he called police."

A source indicated to British newspaper the Sun that the incident may have been a little more serious than that, telling the newspaper that "Someone punched Lance in the back of the head" during the incident in question.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Black "was last spotted at public events in July, attending Wimbledon alongside husband Tom Daly and later accompanying the gold medal-winning diver to investiture ceremonies at Windsor Castle."

THR also pointed out that Black is "the creator of FX's recently released limited series 'Under the Banner of Heaven' starring the Emmy-nominated Andrew Garfield," and that Black's memoir has been adapted into a documentary film that is slated to premiere at the Newfest LGBTQ+ film festival in New York in mid-October.

"He also wrote and produced the upcoming George C. Wolfe-directed film 'Rustin' about the life of gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin," THR said. "That film is expected in 2023."
