The musical about an ex kingpin taking a second chance at life resonated with its cast, who firmly believes in redemption and taking risks in their own life.
"I think that we all go through metamorphosis. And I think in that phase of life, you're constantly evolving and growing," says Gomez. "I don't think I'm ever going to stop growing and learning. So all I know is the values I was taught. And the rest is me blindly doing life like always."
"I'm a very big believer in redemption when redemption is sort of requested and it is worked really hard for," added Saldaña. "Especially now, we're living through times where we're very quick to cancel people without even knowing their real name or their true background or their true stories. And I don't want to be a part of that trend anymore. I really want to be a true believer that second impressions are just as important as the first."
Saldaña stars as Rita, a Mexico City lawyer hired by the cartel kingpin Manitas to help him flee Mexico for gender confirmation surgery. This turns out to be the beginning of a relationship that will continue between Rita and Emilia Perez (Karla Sofía Gascón).
Gascón reveals that friendship among the characters was true on set as well.
"We're friends. First, because we had to work together, because we have to make the best possible film, because we have done an exquisite and phenomenal job. And because they are also wonderful women, all of them," explains the actress. "The strange thing would be that we didn't love each other and weren't friends."
"Emilia Pérez" will appear in theaters November 1, ahead of a November 13 Netflix release.
