Girls' Organization Hosting NY Gender Equality Festival

The organization Girls for Gender Equity is hosting a Gender Equality Festival in New York City on July 28. This will be a no-cost event, open to the public, in Von King Park, in Brooklyn. It will be designed to educate; let people network, share resources, and interact with the community; and give people a chance to see the arts. This is the second year this event is taking place.

Musicians, spoken word artists, and other performers will be on hand to celebrate the occasion. Local politicians are also scheduled to attend. There will be workshops and additional activities for parents and kids to enjoy, as well as free food and giveaways. This festival will also give the public a chance to learn more about New York arts organizations, service groups, youth organizations, schools and nonprofits.

Businesses are encouraged to donate a prize-either an item or a gift certificate-for use during the event's raffle. Girls for Gender Equity continually pushes for the advancement of young girls and women in society. "Through education, organizing and physical fitness, Girls for Gender Equity encourages communities to remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives," Van Deven notes, in the release. Girls for Gender Equity conducts a number of programs throughout the year to help young girls, including a task force to make changes in local schools; gender respect workshops; the mentoring program Sisters in Strength; and self-defense classes.
