NYPD Release Details of Suspect in Alleged Anti-Gay Crime

Officials from the New York City Police Department have released details of the suspect involved in the alleged hate crime against a gay journalist, who was brutally attacked last week just blocks away from Times Square, New York's CBS affiliate CBS 2 reports.

Police released a sketch of the man wanted for beating Randy Gener, 46, an openly gay journalist who was found in a pool of his own blood early morning on Jan. 19 on Seventh Avenue and near 54th Street.

The suspect is believed to be a Hispanic male in his 20s, about 6-feet-tall and about 160 pounds with short black hair, police told CBS 2. He was last seen wearing black jeans and a black jacket. According to the authorities, the suspect fled the scene in a grey four door Nissan with the Mississippi license plate KAT-397.

Police believe the attack is a possible hate crime because Gener's wallet was not stolen.

Gener had to undergo brain surgery because of the severity of his injuries. He is currently listed as in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital.

CBS 2 reports Gener's friends and family say they hope he makes a full recovery in six months to a year.

"We're focused on his recovery, but part of that process is finding the person who did this and understanding why," Jessica Blair-Driessler, Gener's sister, told CBS 2.
