Result of Scottish Independence Vote Predicted by Grindr

GPS driven hook-up app Grindr has proven to be an effective tool on a variety of fronts, ranging from setting up a last minute lunchtime tryst, to finding converts to Christianity. Could political forecasting be next?

Move over Nate Silver, a new statistician is in town. But unlike traditional experts in the field who rely on complex algorithms to make their projections, the secret to one political prognosticator's uncanny prediction of the failed vote for Scottish independence was literally in the palm of his hand.

As Towleroad points out, while no major U.K. media outlet conducted an exit poll in yesterday's historic 55 percent to 45 percent vote by the Scottish people against seceding from the United Kingdom, a Tumblr user conducted his own informal poll of prospective voters using the location based gay hook-up application Grindr. The results were surprisingly accurate.

"I've spent the past couple of days asking several hundred Grindr users in Edinburgh whether they believe Scotland should be an independent country. Replies were of variable quality," said Tumblr user machotrouts.

Using a sampling of 655 people the results were as follows:

NO: 114
YES: 101
Undecided: 24
Other opinion: 20
Indifference: 15
Evasion: 38
Bemusement: 13
Amusement: 2
Too horny to answer: 6
General rejection: 4
Did not respond: 318

With only decisive opinions taken into account, the votes for Scottish independence was a 54-46 percent split in favor of staying part of the United Kingdom. The result of yesterday's referendum was a 55-45 percent split.

"If this is reflected in the results of tomorrow's referendum," machotrouts wrote. "we can assume the headless torsos have taken over Scotland and there's nothing you can do to stop it."
