HBO Officially Announces 'Looking' Cancellation, 'Special' in the Works

News broke Wednesday morning that HBO was planning to cancel "Looking" after it was reported that Vanity Fair celebrity journalist Kevin Sessums took to Facebook Tuesday night and wrote that star Jonathan Groff emailed him that the show would not return for a third season.

But now HBO has now confirmed that the show following three gay friends in San Francisco is indeed canceled.

"After two years of following Patrick and his tight-knit group of friends as they explored San Francisco in search of love and lasting relationships, HBO will present the final chapter of their journey as a special," an HBO spokesperson told EDGE. "We look forward to sharing this adventure with the shows loyal fans."

In Sessums' Facebook post, he mentioned that, like HBO's short-lived "Hello Ladies," that "Looking" would wrap up with a movie. According to HBO's statement, it looks like the "special" may be that TV movie.

"I had an email from my friend Jonathan Groff when I got home from my reading tonight at Books Inc. telling me that HBO announced today that it was canceling Looking but that it would film a movie of the series to air in order to wrap things up instead of leaving things hanging. This makes me sad but life - and television series - are about moving on at some point," Sessums wrote.

It may not be a surprise to some that HBO is pulling the plug on "Looking" as it was reported over the last few weeks that she show, which stars Groff, Murray Bartlett, Frankie J Alvarez and Raul Castillo, had poor ratings.

Nevertheless, a number of publications championed "Looking," urging HBO to keep the program on the air and for a third season.
