'Really Gay' Feminist Teen's Yearbook Quote Goes Viral

A California teen's yearbook quote has gone viral for its strong message on gender and marriage equality, receiving thousands of retweets and favorites.

WCVB.com reported that 18-year-old Caitlyn Cannon, who graduated from a high school in Oak Hills, California, has blown up Twitter with her comments about feminism.

"I need feminism because I intend on marrying rich and can't do that if my wife and I are making .75 cent for every dollar a man makes," wrote Cannon in her yearbook. Kudos to the high school for not censoring the teen's comments.

Cannon told Cosmpolitan.com that she was "really gay" and a feminist to boot.

"While it would have been fun to submit something funny or silly, I think it was even more rewarding to submit the truth, and call some attention to it," she said.

Although most of the comments made have been supportive, some Twitter users like @blackmaniacremarked "if only that '75 cents for every dollar a man makes' stuff were true."

But Global News countered that, "The wage gap in both Canada and the United States is very much a real thing."

They noted that a May report in The Globe and Mail suggested women in Canada get paid about $8,000 a year less than men for equivalent work. Women working in Ontario in 2012 made just 74 cents for every dollar a man made, according to the province's Equal Pay Commission.

"The numbers are similar in the United States where women make roughly 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, according to the White House," they added.
