Lea DeLaria Plays Special Bowie Release Concert at Cutting Room

EDGE READ TIME: 4 MIN.

On July 18, Lea DeLaria launches her innovative new album "House of David: delaria + bowie = jazz," which boldly reexamines the work of music icon David Bowie, with a special release concert at New York City venue The Cutting Room.

"Bowie is not only a god of rock and arbiter of style, but he's THE defining singer-songwriter of the latter part of the 20th century," said DeLaria. "From 'Suffragette City' to'Labyrinth'throughZiggy Stardustand 'The Hunger,' his bold career choices and mind-blowing artistic technique flies in the face of convention. He is quite simply a legend. David's music lends itself perfectly to the language of jazz. I hope he sees this album as the tribute to his genius that I mean it to be. LONG LIVE DAVID BOWIE."

The innovative new album from DeLaria is available on iTunes here, and other digital formats from Ghostlight Records. The television, stage and music star, currently best known as"Carrie 'Big Boo' Black" in the hit Netflix series "Orange is the New Black," will celebrate the album with an exclusive concert at The Cutting Room.

DeLaria recently performed the opening track "Fame" with Conan O'Brien on his TV program "Conan," which is available here. "House of David" physical CDs will be available in stores and online July 24. The first major jazz reworking on Bowie's beloved catalog, the album features tracks such as a smooth bossa nova interpretation of "Golden Years," a trenchant "Life On Mars" and a roof-raising gospel take on "Modern Love." "House of David" is produced by Matt Pierson with Jeremy Katz serving as Executive Producer.

"House of David" features Kevin Hays on piano and keyboards,Tony Scherr on bass and guitar,Steve Cardenas on guitar,Kenny Wollesen on drums and vibes,Seamus Blake on saxophones,Bashiri Johnson on percussion,Shedrick Mitchell on Hammond B3 and special featured vocalistJanis Siegel.

DeLaria boasts a multi-faceted career as a comedian, actress and jazz musician. She holds the distinction of being the first openly gay comic on television in America which led to countless television and film roles portraying police lieutenants, PE teachers and the lesbian who inappropriately hits on straight women. Selected TV credits include "Awkward," "Clarence," "Californication," "The Oblongs," "One Live to Live," "Law and Order: SVU," "Will and Grace," "Friends" and "Matlock." Selected film credits include "The First Wives Club," "Dear Dumb Diary" and "Edge of Seventeen."

She's received Obie and Theater World Awards, and a Drama Desk nomination for her portrayal as Hildy in the Public Theatre's revival of "On The Town," an Ovation nomination for "The Boys From Syracuse," and has played both Eddie and Dr. Scott in the gender-bending Broadway musical "The Rocky Horror Show." DeLaria was the featured vocalist at the 50th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, and has performed in some of the most prestigious houses in the world including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Chicago Symphony, Hollywood Bowl, The Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House.
