Help Families Impacted by HIV: Donate to Iris House on #Giving Tuesday
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Today is #GivingTuesday, and a perfect time to show that your community is important to you. You can make a gift today to Iris House, the New York City-based AIDS Service Organization that helps women and their families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
"Over the last eight years, we've seen incredible growth and support from government sources, the creation of a National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the introduction of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and an incredible increase in the number of people living with HIV who are virally suppressed / 'undetectable,'" said Ingrid N. Floyd, Executive Director. "This could all change in 2017 as an unchecked congress begins to look at ways to cut Medicaid, to repeal the Affordable Care Act and to radically scale down discretionary programs, like those funded by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control."
Just as we're beginning to figure out how to get the HIV epidemic under control, we are going to lose critical tools in the fight. Your gift todaycan make a difference by supporting the work they do each and every day by helping people like Lucille, who said, "This is the first place I fit in. [Iris House] is the first organization that I have been involved with that had any programs for a heterosexual woman that is not an ex-addict."
Lucille started as a client in their care coordination program and now works in their kitchen. She's part of the amazing team that feeds nearly 80 people every day and also provided nearly 100,000 meals to people living with HIV and other members of our community over the last year. She even brings her daughters in to volunteer.
"The future of government funding is uncertain: we know there will be cuts, but we don't know how, where or when. We do know that the mothers and daughters, the fathers and sons and the extended families that we serve may be left out," said Floyd. "You are why Lucille has a place where she fits in. Your gifts are why Iris House can exist. We've come too far fighting this epidemic to backslide now."
Make a gift today, not just because it's #GivingTuesday, but because there are people who need you. You can be a superhero by making your gift a recurring one! Help us guarantee services for people like Lucille month after month.
Join Iris House on December 1, World AIDS Day, at the Dedication of the New York City AIDS Memorial from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Greenwich Avenue and Seventh Avenue. The event is free and open to all.
