Antigone Rising Plays Bowery Ballroom

Antigone Rising is set to rock The Bowery Ballroom in New York City, Saturday, April 29, with special guest star The Push Stars.

Antigone Rising has a rich history and a kind of storybook arc to their career. They were the first band on the Starbucks Hear Music Label where they achieved big success very quickly. They were opening for such acts as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Rob Thomas, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, and more recently, The Bangles, The Indigo Girls, etc. They were signed to Lava Records, a lead singer change came next and a rebuilding musically into a more country pop sensibility.

Founding sisters Cathy and Kristen Henderson have always had the same philosophy. Play better than the boys and make sure the fans feel like part of the family. That philosophy plus writing undeniably catchy songs has allowed this self-sustained group to maintain its independence and leave an indelible mark on an industry best known for leaving girl (bands) behind. Antigone Rising's music is a happy, upbeat blend of pop, rock and country and their live performances are a fun evening of incredible musicianship, soaring 3-part harmonies and witty banter.

The massive success of their recent releases "Whiskey & Wine Volume I" and "Whiskey & Wine Volume 2" kept the band on the road for the most part. "That was the Whiskey," co-written with Grammy winner Lori McKenna (Faith Hill, Little Big Town, Hunter Hayes), premiered on CMT trending in the Top 10 and was nominated in the "Country Song" Category at The 13th Annual Independent Music Awards.

Antigone Rising is made up of unique and creative women who are dedicated to supporting many causes from equality for women, to world hunger, to international peace. Antigone Rising continues to play a major part in LGBT advocacy. Just a few years ago, they made news when Kristen Henderson appeared on the cover of Time Magazine with wife Sarah Kate Ellis (GLAAD President & CEO) for a feature on marriage equality.

The band traveled to Vietnam as Cultural Ambassadors for the United States doing outreach programs, master classes and public concerts to audiences in Ho Chi Minh City and the central coastal city of Nha Trang. They have also traveled to the Middle East as Arts Envoys for the United States Department of State, visiting the cities and territories within Israel and the West Bank, promoting peace and understanding through good rocking American music. The band united with the Push4 Peace organization to promote world peace, and their musical encore was included in a global effort on International Peace Day that was streamed all over the world through Peace TV.

The band has started its own foundation called "Girls Rising," whose mission is to empower young girls and inspire women to step outside their comfort zones, take risks and do what they love regardless of society's perceptions. Girls Rising outreach workshops inspire young girls to be anything they want to be. The workshops inspire young boys too! They encourage families to bring their kids for a really fun hour while the band talks about their experiences as women in the music industry with a few songs tossed in.
