American Horror Story: Cult
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Two actors continue to amaze me in the seventh season of FX's horror anthology series: Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters. Both give tour-de-force performances in "American Horror Story: Cult," a DVD collection of 11 episodes that are notches above the bloody and inconsistent "Roanoke" season.
"AHS" reinvents itself in Season Seven, but irked some viewers who were expecting a non-political set of shows. Show creator Ryan Murphy turned expectations around and presented a straight-ahead modern horror tale completely in touch with the times.
This time around, the series centers around Ally (Sarah Paulson), who on the night of the 2016 Presidential election becomes mortified at the thought of having Donald Trump as the new U.S. president. She's not alone; her cuckoo neighbor Kai (Evan Peters) wants to take matters into his own hands, and starts planning a mass murder.
Meanwhile, Ally has visions of killer clowns running amok in her town. But could the murderous clowns be real after all?
The phobia-induced Ally, who's a woman on the verge of a mental breakdown, is played to perfection by Paulson. And Evan Peters' portrayal of Kai, with his blue hair and bugged-out eyes, gives a chilling performance.
Gone from "Cult" are many of the other "AHS" staple actors from past seasons.
The sole special feature on 20th Century Fox's 3-disc DVD set, "American Horror Story: Cult Promos," once again should've been left off for a longer and much needed behind-the-scenes and/or interview segment. Luckily, the episodes themselves still call for a DVD purchase, and the set is a welcome addition to the "AHS" home entertainment collection.
