Grindr Premieres Comedy Special for April 1
Serving up a side of queer humor along with its menu of hookup options, gay dating app Grindr premieres its first livestream comedy special today on YouTube, as well as in the app.
The special, titled "Gag Reflex," features "a roster of rising queer comedians," Variety reports.
Among the talent, a press release from the app announced, are "Joel Kim Booster ('Sunnyside,' 'Shrill'), Sydnee Washington ('Broad City'), Jay Jurden ('The Tonight Show')," and "notable NYC comedians Jaye McBride and Zach Zimmerman.
"Each standup set will feature hilarious insights into modern dating and the queer experience," the release adds.
Executive Producer Patrick Rogers commented, "Comedy is such an integral part of the queer experience, and we couldn't think of a better time to show off our brightest queer comedic talents" than a day traditionally associated with jokes and humor.
"After getting through a particularly difficult year for the community, we're so excited to share in some much-needed laughter," Rogers added.
Grindr's daily active users topped 5 million in March, Variety noted.
The news follows last month's announcement of Grindr's upcoming foray into scripted series production with the comedy "Bridesmen," noted Global Dating Insights. "Bridesmen" centers around "a gay man who attempts to undermine his best friend's wedding," GDI noted, and its episodes will run ten minutes in length.
Grindr also produces short-form YouTube series "Old Gays" and "Quarantine Queens."
"Dating apps and queer-trafficked spaces have been increasingly investing in original streaming content," Variety noted, citing Pornhub's acquisition of "Shakedown," a documentary about "lesbian strip club culture in the early 2000s" and Tindr's production of "Swipe Right," "a user-controlled original series... which let users decide the fate of the narrative."
