Watch: Chappell Roan Shouts Out to Trans Artists, Queer Kids in Midwest, in VMA Speech

Rising star Chappell Roan won the VMA award for Best New Artist, and she turned her speech into a powerhouse address thanking trans recording artists and offering hope to queer youth.
"I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me," Roan said, reading her words out from her diary, in which she had written her speech, Deadline reported.
The cheering crowd went even wilder as she spoke.
"And I dedicate this to queer and trans people that fuel pop," Roan went on to say, "[and] to the gays who dedicate my songs to someone they love – or hate!"
Seeming to reference comments she recently made about the pressures of fame and how some fans have "stalked" her, Roan said: "And thank you to the people who are fans, who listen to me, who hear me when I share my joys and my fears. Thank you for listening!"
But the pop artist, whose career had skyrocketed recently, wasn't finished yet. As the crowd continued to go wild, Roan added: "And for all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now, I see you, I understand you, because I'm one of you."
"And don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't be exactly who you want to be, bitch," Roan – still dressed in the medieval costume she had worn for her performance of her hit "Good Luck, Babe!" – finished.
That performance "[gave] visuals reminiscent of Joan of Arc, which many are calling Roan of Arc," Deadline noted.
